lyre clocklyre clock

This is an exceptionally beautiful antique Lyre/Banjo clock made in New England, probably Massachusetts, in the period 1860 - 1880.

The mahogany case has great proportions and is superbly carved. It exhibits excellent cabinetry and retains its original finish plus a fine patina.

The original eglomise panels (reverse painted glass) in the shaped waist and bottom box are gold leaf with black background displaying the best quality and a unique design in complete harmony with the clock's form. The panels are in fine condition.

The eight day weight driven movement is of classic Massachusetts design with very finely cut wheels and pinions. The movement is in fine condition. The painted iron dial retains its original paint with some light wear and age patina. The steel hands are very well cut and retain their original blued finish with some patina.

This exceptional clock is in fine original condition and though unsigned represents the best of its period in design, proportions, quality, and condition. We hope the several pages of pictures - both overall and detail - showing as many aspects of the piece as possible will provide a good idea of how impressive this clock is.
