Antique Private Label Pocket Watch with Gold Inlaid 'LONGHORN'

Scroll for description

A rare and fabulous San Antonio, Texas large antique pocketwatch with a gold 'Texas Longhorn' bull inlaid on the back of its coin silver open face case. This very well cared for watch was most likely a proud possession of a Texas Cattleman. The cattle business was one of the most important industries of the American West and Texas was its center. History and folk lore show Texas, and the city of San Antonio, were keynote players in the romance of the American West well into the early decades of the 20th century.

This very impressive 18 size openface timepiece is marked on its dial and movement, "Critzer Bros., San Antonio, Texas". The heavy coin silver case freatures a large inlaid and engraved gold 'Texas Longhorn' bull in the back of its case.

The 18 size top quality 15 jewel movement in this timepiece was built for the CritzerBrothers - well known jewelers of San Antonio - by the Illinois Watch Company, and is their Model 4, open face, stem set movement introduced in 1891 and stated by them to be a railroad grade watch. By serial number this Texas watch was built in 1900. During the second half of the 19th century American watch manufacturers would, on special order, put their best customer's names on watches made for these customers. the production of 'private label' watches, as these pieces have come to be called by collectors, was small and watches bearing the names of jewelers on the American Frontier are rare.

Condition: This watch is in excellent original condition. The 15 jewel movement is running well, the double sunk porcelain dial is excellent with lovely original fire blued steel hands. The watch retains its original heavy beveled crystal. This watch has a heavy coin silver swing-open-case, sometimes called a 'refridgerator case' by collectors. This type case was designed to provide extra protection and waterproofing for watches carried by men who worked outdoors under rough conditions. This handsome case is in excellent condition (one small dent near the left edge of the caseback). The gold inlaid Texas Longhorn' is especially well modeled with fine engraved detail.

A beautiful pocketwatch which must have been important to its original owner who obviously took very good care of it. This exemplary Wild West artifact has survived in great condition and one wonders what interesting keepers it had. We have owned this rare piece for many years and are now downsizing. This is the only fine Texas pocketwatch with golden Texas Longhorn we have seen.
