1912 Watercolor of "Her Majesty's Torpedo Boat No. 24, C.G. Strong

Scroll for description

An excellent watercolor painting on artist board of the British Royal Navy Torpedo Boat No. 24 signed lower left, 'C.G. Strong' and on the lower right, 'H.M.T.B. No. 24, 1912'. The back of the painting bears the markings of the artist board manufacturer, 'Whatman's, Water Colour Sketching board, Windsor & Newton, Ltd.'

In addition the board is inscribed, 'To "Birdie" with love. Hoping it will bring her Happy Memories'.

Until the development of practical film cameras naval officers exhibiting artistic talent were trained in drawing and watercolor so they might make visual records of ships, headlands, and ports they observed during their service. It is very possible C. G. Strong was a Royal Navy officer who created this portrait of his ship for a lady friend. The signature on this painting indicates it was signed once lightly and then signed again and titled.

The development of self propelled torpedoes and the marine steam turbine engine at the end of the 19th century created a David vs. Goliath situation wherby little warships, (torpedoboats) could take a run at big warships (battleships) with some expectation of success and survival. This painting is very finely executed, the torpedo boat shows excelllent proportions and great detail with fine color. Marine art collectors find period high quality paintings of the smaller warships of major navies to be quite scarce. This one is very appealing.

This painting is in excellent original condition.
