An Early and Large Inuit Soapstone Carving
A fine looking and unusually large carved soapstone figure standing 13" tall. We believe it is INUIT in origin and depicts a Shaman shape shifting, becoming a Divinity.
This carving has especially fine poise and character. We believe it is an early work pre-dating the 'Tourist' period of Inuit carving.
The subject relates directly to Inuit belief. The piece is not signed. Most likely created for spiritual purpose there was no need to sign it since those it was made for knew who did the work, and artist's vanity could have been considered offensive. It is impressive intending to convey power. In the post 1950 tourist period Inuit artist's signatures became desirable as did smaller more generally recognizable objects made for outsiders wanting signatures to aid in appreciation of the work.
This impressive carving was recently discovered in a Newport, Rhode Island estate. It is in fine condition with a fine patina.
Dimensions: 13" tall, 8" wide, and heavy.
Price: $850.00
